Unit 23 LO1.1 - What is a personal media profile?

What is a personal media profile?

A personal media profile

A personal profile is a platform in which represents yourself. It may consist of many objectives you have achieved, your interests and what you can offer. Having a personal media profile is similar to having a digital portfolio. It is a place that can bring potential clients by showing off your work and potential services for people who require a specific job done. However, a personal profile centres more towards the person rather than the work and could be a good way to bring a good connection between people and a good way discuss certain topics with new opinions on matters.

A social media profile

A social media profile covers a whole range of uses. One use could be for general presence to access the latest feed to be updated on, whilst also showcasing your general life to your followers. On a more professional side, social media accounts are very useful. Whether you have an Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, having an online presence for your business or offered services is very beneficial. Having a social media profile allows customers or clients to have a little bit of an understanding of what is included on the profile. For example, if you are a graphic designer or interested in that field of art but are struggling to entice clients, setting up a social media account such as Instagram will allow you to have that online presence to post up images of your work and commissions. It will also allow you to grow a following, which can ultimately lead to being well known and respected in your particular field and bring on the opportunity to have more clients wanting your services.

Above is my Instagram page where the main focus is my graphic design projects. I have attracted a couple of clients over the past few months of having the account set up which has been very helpful in engaging with client briefs and working it the real world.

Digital Portfolio

The Instagram page is a way of having an online portfolio, however there are more options in which you can do. The best portfolio for an individual, is simply is down to personal preference and something that brings out their identity and image in what they do. A digital portfolio can be presented in many forms. One could be in the shape of a website or blog, which allows anyone in the world to view your work or create a community around it. Another one could be a presentation. This is mostly seen when there needs to be a submission of a portfolio. For example, in my personal experience, I have had to submit a portfolio for a university interview to finalise my application. This is a very popular method in recent years, especially as the digital age has strived and become more accessible.

Why do I need a personal media profile?

Having a personal media profile is very beneficial. It is a way of keeping up with the world and what is has become in the technology side of things, especially when it is online. Having a personal media profile is crucial to keep up with todays day and age. Many ways of having one is through social media. Social media is a powerful tool that can ultimately shape your life and present a series of opportunities or a lack of. A personal media profile allows people around the world to have an insight of who you are and what you do. This could be any one who you have connected with who shares common interests, or a company pursuing a background check after applying for a certain roll.

As stated further above, a personal profile can also be place to showcase work you have completed and want to promote to others. Whether you are a video editor, graphic designer or movie producer, having a personal media profile and showcasing that content will allow many more opportunities for your self and an increase of projects will come your way. This would be because so many new people are seeing what your life is about and how much you are invested in what you do.

Strengths and Weaknesses of a personal profile / portfolio...

This site is a professional, personal portfolio for a graphic designer under the name of Chris Tammar. Below is a brief outline of the strengths and weaknesses of this site and some recommendations on how it could be developed: (I have chosen a graphic designer as it is an extremely relevant topic to me)

Strengths:

When you first enter the site, you are struck with the work that is shown in which has been produced for clients or projects completed to showcase his skills. Above is the home page and the way it has been presented us vital for the consumer. With the immediate showcase of the work he has produced, this gives off a professional stance of his services. The way the images are shot and the usage of professional looking mock up templates are very helpful in this case as it shows the consumer that Chris takes all of his work seriously and makes sure everything he produces is perfect right across the board. This is also helpful for the client who's project is being showcased as the presentation and professionalism gives a positive reputation for the clients business. Another strength is the colour of the background being white. This straight away allows all of the presented work boldly and appealing due to the clearness of the images. The fact there are also links involved within the page that allow you to expand

Weaknesses:

The weaknesses of this website portfolio would be the way it is presented in terms of images and title. It is a good thing that they are there, however, I do not believe they bring a significant effect to the site. This is because I find it repetitive with all the links leading to the same subject. I believe this limits the navigation of the site as it may lead the viewer to be going round the site in a cycle.
