Unit 23 Lesson 4

LO2.2 - SWOT Analysis

LO2.2 Prospective Employers

What do they want?

List qualifications needed and in particular, looking at what skills employers want and any likely interview requirements.

- Analytical Skills > These skills are important as it is vital to understand what is either being portrayed or completed and what the reasons are for that. Communication is key, so having communication and analytical skills will get you a long way in the media industry. Having the audience understanding what is occurring and why it is happening will extend the market of your product or medium and bring success to whatever you aim to achieve.

- Project Management > Being good at managing what is happening around you and what other people are doing is quite important for the media industry. Sometimes a project may cover several different departments with different tasks sharing the same deadline and budget. Knowing what has been done and what needs to be completed next will allow any project to run smoothly and quickly whether working with a team or individually.

- Creating and Editing > These skills will get you far in the industry of media, even if you only specialise in one. They are a vital part of what makes media, what it is. The topic of creating is foundation blocks of the editing, as you work out what would be best for the certain subject and how can it be perceived by the audience. With creating, you also have to consider the demographic and audience and make sure the ideas are able to be portrayed physically. Editing comes with skill and when done right, the ideas and creating have worked. With editing, it is making sure the final outcome is able to appeal to the audience and make the audience grow.

- Qualification in Media studies > Having any qualification in a relevant subject to the industry to wish to pursue is always helpful and useful. In the point of view of media, having the knowledge of the sector will progress you further into the industry especially due to it being relatively new in the world from the last few decades. Understanding and acknowledging the key aspects of media will help you stand out as you will be able to implement all of that into the work in which is produced.

‘Johnny cannot make up his mind whether to go to university or complete an apprenticeship with an employer. He is looking to eventually work in the digital/ media industry. Can you produce an outline report for Jonny detailing what he needs to do to follow the apprenticeship route?

In todays age of technology, going down the apprenticeship route is easier than ever before and having an understanding of how to get one and what is available, is equally as simple. There are many guides and forms of information that Johnny can look at to make up his mind. Some examples of these websites are the government website (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/higher-and-degree-apprenticeships) (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/a-guide-to-apprenticeships) (https://www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship), the UCAS website and other sites which can be easily found through a quick google search.
